Obituary for Norman Moses

Norman Moses, 78, passed away the afternoon of July 1, 2021 at UPMC Passavant after an extended illness.

Born in New Castle on October 7, 1942, Norman was the son of the late John and Emma Albert Moses.

He married the former Carolle Boak on April 26, 1986. She survives.

Norman was a member of St. Elias Orthodox Church.

He graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Elementary and Special Education in 1973. He did this while parenting two young children and working the night shift at Youngstown Sheet and Tube.

In 2013, he retired after almost 40 years as C.E.O. of Lawrence County Association for Responsible Care. A life-long New Castle resident, Norman believed in giving back to the community. His civic highlights included coordinating the Special Olympics of Lawrence County from 1975-1990; holding various positions in the Kiwanis Club during his 35-year membership; serving on the Board of Directors for Cray Youth and Family Services; and most recently, the New Castle School Board.

He was proud of his Syrian heritage and even prouder to be an American. A U.S. Army Veteran, Norman proudly served his country in the 1960s. He spoke fondly of his time at various U.S. military bases, and even played minor league baseball for the Ponce Lions while stationed in Puerto Rico.

He was a great storyteller, loved a good joke and treasured time spent with all his “boys” in the pool hall.

In addition to his wife, Norman is survived by his children, Norman (Dana) Moses of Austintown, Norie- Lynn (Pete) lvkovic of Pittsburgh, Rachel (Ghassan) Zughaib of Hopewell, Jesse Moses of New Philadelphia, Ohio and Alex Moses of Boardman; five grandchildren, Kenny and Hanna lvkovic, Bryan (Olivia) Gaglione, Micah and Luca Zughaib, and two great-grandchildren Mia and Sophia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters Buddea Moses, Sophie Thomas, Rose Manolis, Sara Assid and Norma Sheldone; and five brothers, Waddy Moses, William Moses, Thomas Moses, Ralph Moses and James 'Dusty' Moses.

Visitation will be on Tuesday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road.

A Service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Dave Snyder will officiate.

Entombment will be in Parkside Mausoleum.
