Obituary

Fred E. Charles, 84, of Union Township passed away the morning of February 7, 2020 at his residence.

Born in New Castle on July 29, 1935 he was the son of the late Samuel and Pheobe Mansour Charles. He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Assid who he married on April 23, 1961.

Fred worked for over twenty years as a structural iron worker. He was a member of the Iron Workers Local Union 207 in Boardman, Ohio.

Fred was a member of St. Elias Orthodox Church.

Fred was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching football.

In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by his children, Fred M. Charles and his fiancé, Nikki Stewart of New Castle, Leah Ashton and her husband Howard of Poland, Ohio, Samantha Laverty and her husband Chuck of Poland, Ohio, his brother, Mitchell Charles and his wife Jane of New Castle, his sisters, Yvonne Joseph of Fairfax, Virginia, Elaine Mansour and her husband Michel of New Castle and seven grandchildren, L. Taylor Ashton-Beil, Nick Ashton, Gabriell Charles, Andrea Charles, Fred M. Charles, Jr., Blake Laverty and Jayce Laverty.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his three sisters, Adele Hopper, Sally Charles and Edna Jimm.

Visitation will be on Monday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road.

A Trisagion Service will be held at the funeral home on Monday evening at 6:45 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elias Orthodox Church. Father Kevin Long will officiate.

Burial will be in Parkside Cemetery.

Had wonderful memories with the Charles family growing up. Mr Charles and his wife were so great to my brother and me. I want the family to know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Fred was a good man and I’ll miss his presence on this earth. Love, David M Young Sr

We meet Fred when our son married Samantha, always talked and had the nicest smile on his face, enjoyed talking to him at every get together. We will miss him with all our hearts. Our love and prayers are with his family forever .
