Obituary for Dr. Murray A. Towle

Dr. Murray A. Towle, 84, of Neshannock Township, a retired surgeon, died Sunday morning, February 13, 2022, of Metastatic prostate cancer. He died peacefully at home with his family by his side after a prolonged illness.
Dr. Towle was born in Newburyport Massachusetts, on March 20, 1937 and was the son of Samuel A. Towle, a postmaster, and his wife, Margaret C. (Murray) Towle. He was raised in Hampton, NH and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1955. Dr. Towle attended Dartmouth College where he graduated in 1959, Dartmouth Medical School Class of 1961, and Harvard Medical School Class of 1963. His internship training took him to Philadelphia General Hospital, and later residency in surgery at Detroit Medical Center. During the Vietnam conflict, D. Towle served as Lieutenant Commander medical officer in the US Navy Reserve. It was during his service where he met his wife and soul mate of fifty- five years, Jane Ellen, marrying in 1967. He served his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock/Mary Hitchcock Memorial hospital 1967 to 1971. It was in Hanover NH where they began their family of four children.
Dr. Towle moved to Greenville, Pennsylvania in 1979 where he served the NW Pennsylvania area practicing medicine for twenty-eight years, firstly at the Greenville Medical Center followed by surgeon at UPMC Horizon Greenville Hospital until he retired in 2008. A humble man with unwavering principles, his loving care for his patients was his focus throughout his career.
In retirement, Murray pursued his love of gardening and became a master gardener. He traveled often to the New England coast to reunite with family; the central coast of Maine holding a special place in his heart. He loved the outdoors, spending much of his time caring for his garden. And he loved his local sports teams and would rarely miss his beloved Penguins and Steelers games.
He is survived by his wife, Jane E. (Macfarlane) Towle at home, and brother Allen Towle of Lee, MA. Also surviving are his two daughters, Alison Fogarty and her husband, Charles, of Greenville, SC; Amy Robertson and her husband David of Zelienople, PA; son John Towle and wife Melissa of Knoxville, TN; son Mark Towle and wife Kassie Towle of Palmdale, CA; and five grandchildren; Adeline, Miela, Charlie, Julian and Jack.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Towle was preceded in death by his brother, Philip A. Towle.
The Family will receive friends on Friday, February 25th, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Matthew Bupp, AHN Hospice Chaplain will officiate.
