Obituary for David N. Flamino

David N. Flamino, a long time New Castle resident, left this world to visit our Lord on September 13, 2021. He was born in New Castle to Domenic and Yolanda (Colecchi) Flamino. David was the middle child of 11 children.

At an early age, David was an eager and skilled student. By age 17, he had already graduated from New Castle High and completed 3 semesters at Westminster College. In March 1946, David was drafted and stationed in South Korea where he served as a member of the US Army Criminal Investigation Division.

After his honorable discharge, David returned to Westminster College where he completed his degree in Political Science and History. David spent his junior year at the University of Zurich in Switzerland and was fortunate to travel extensively in Europe; including Austria, Germany, France, and Italy. A favorite memory was visiting Italian relatives and picnicking in the olive groves on local wine, bread and cheeses. These early experiences cultivated lifelong interests in history, travel, foreign languages and ethnic cuisine.

David married Beverly Furlong in August 1950. They raised 6 children and family life was full and hectic. He started a successful career as a claims adjuster with Aetna Life & Casualty Insurance Co., and soon became the Regional Supervisor in the New Castle Office. In 1965, he moved with his family to Aetna's home office in Connecticut and worked his way to Officer in Charge of Part-B Medicare operations. After 25 years with Aetna, David returned to New Castle and worked in sales for Treloar & Heisel Inc.

David was an expert gardener and woodworker. On evenings and weekends, he worked tirelessly on garden or home improvement projects. David was also an excellent public speaker. Whether performing Shakespeare in college, narrating documentary films, running seminars for Aetna or lecturing at mass for over 50 years, David's deep Thespian voice commanded attention. The elderly parishioners at St. Camillus de Lellis appreciated David's audible delivery of daily biblical passages.

Upon retirement, David enjoyed time attending daily mass, gardening, traveling and reading history. He also enjoyed spending numerous winters in Vero Beach, Florida.

David is survived by siblings Margaret, Paul, Corrine (Cote) and Walter; his children David, Denise (Ulick), Deborah, Douglas, Duncan and Dhyana (Wade); 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents Domenic and Yolanda and siblings Roger, Arthur, Christine (Bordonaro), Chester, Brady and Mary Lou (Melder).

A viewing will be held Friday, Sept 17th from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home, 3000 Wilmington Road in New Castle, PA. A procession will leave the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Camillus de Lellis Church at 314 W. Englewood Avenue, New Castle, PA. Father Benjamin Barr will officiate.

Entombment will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Three Rivers Hospice, 217 N. Jefferson St., New Castle, PA, 16101 or Catholic Relief Services, PO Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297.
