Obituary for Nicholas D. Catarcio

Nicholas D. Catarcio, 79, of New Castle, passed away the morning of September 18, 2019 at Allegheny General Hospital.

Born in Ellwood City, PA on April 24, 1940, Nick was the son of the late Anthony C. and Annabelle M. Nocera Catarcio. Preceding him in death on January 30, 2016 was his loving wife of over forty seven years, the former Darlene M. Makarevich, whom he married on May 11, 1968.

He was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish. Nick was a veteran of the United States Army. He retired from the New Castle Transit Authority where he worked as a driver. He had also worked at the Westinghouse Plant and in his earlier years had worked as an EMT for the Ed and Don DeCarbo Ambulance Service.

Nick was a 1958 graduate of New Castle High School and was an avid Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers’ fan. Nick loved spending time with his family. He was especially devoted to his two granddaughters, the loves of his life and enjoyed attending all of their activities. Nick will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Nichole Columbus and her husband Doug of New Castle, his granddaughters, Alexandra and Christina; his in-laws, who were like siblings to him, Patricia Torsello, Paul Makarevich, Pete and Sally Makarevich, William Makarevich, Bob & Jean Makarevich, John Walko; his niece, Deanna Othites and husband Mike, his nephew, Mark Torsello and wife Shannon and will also be sadly missed by his dog, Gidget.

Visitation will be Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St.

A procession will leave the funeral home on Saturday morning at 8:30am for Holy Spirit Parish St. Vitus Site where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00am officiated by Father Anthony Sciarappa.

Entombment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens.
