Obituary for Samuel T. Gunnett

Samuel T. Gunnett, 88, formerly of Lathrop Street passed away the morning of August 19, 2019 at Quality of Life Services of New Castle.

Born on October 29, 1930 in New Castle he was the son of the late Theodore “Dory” and Irene Glassi Gunnett.

Sam was married for over fifty years to the former Rosemarie Ann Marchionda and she preceded him in death on March 9, 2013.

Sam graduated with a college degree in civil engineering. Just after earning his degree he was drafted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He served in a European tour in France and Germany.

After returning home, Sam taught Civil Engineering Technology at the Lawrence County Vo-Tech School, was assistant New Castle City Engineer for over fifteen years, was a PA licensed land surveyor and was a Project Improvement Engineer & Code Enforcement Director.
Sam enjoyed outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing, especially hunting with his dogs (Weimeraners), he was a singer with the German Eintracht Singing Society, a member of the Hoyt for many years and a member of the New Castle Sport Car Club and the SCCA. Sam was an avid reader of European and American history and had pursued learning the European languages of Italian and French. In practice, Sam’s love of the arts has taken form in photography, drawing, pastels and painting. Sam’s work has been exhibited in many regional exhibitions and art shows throughout the geographical region. His work has been exhibited in 2 two-person shows, with Debra Shingledecker, at the Valley Art Guild in Sharon, Pa.

Sam is survived by his cousin, Raelyn Marburger and his friend, Debra Shingledecker.

In addition to his parents and wife, Sam was preceded in death by his cousin, Irene Glassi Marburger.

Visitation will be on Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 South Mill St.

The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites at the funeral home on Thursday.

A Blessing Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 12:00 p.m.

Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
