Obituary for William "Billy" Stoner

William “Billy” Stoner, 73, of New Castle passed away April 20, 2019 at UPMC Shadyside, after his battle with cancer.

He was born on January 6, 1946 in New Castle to the late Irene (Natale) Stoner Leitera and Fred Stoner.

Billy will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather.

He will also be remembered as “Sensei” to the majority of the students in Karate in this area and throughout the U.S.

Billy was of the Catholic faith and was a member and usher at St Vitus Church. He was a proud Italian American citizen and made sure everyone knew about it.

He was a 1963 graduate of New Castle High School.

Billy worked for the New Castle Transit Authority. He took much pride in his job. He especially liked working the Lark workshop run that serviced the Special Needs individuals.

His passion was Karate of which art he lived, drank and slept for more than forty years. He was known as “Sensei” to all who studied the art. He was in traditional style Japanese Karate and took pride in having an annual Karate Tournament in New Castle and also in attending an International Karate Tournament yearly in California. He was known as a disciplinarian to all who studied with him. He always focused on the small finer details. He followed the motto of see one, do one, teach one. He also believed in the Japanese philosophy of “fall down seven times, get up eight”, which he even displayed until the end of his fight with Cancer.

Billy is survived by his loving wife Shirley, daughters, Melissa and Danielle, his son, Nicholas, grandchildren, Nadalynn, Amber, Tyler, Allegra and great grandson, Trevor, brothers, Dr. Fred Stoner (Pamela) and James “Jimmy” Leitera and niece, Joana Marie Stoner, and several cousins and in-laws.

In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his step-father Anthony Leitera and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Visitation will be on Wednesday 4:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 South Mill St.

A procession will leave the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vitus Church at 10:00 a.m. Father William Siple will officiate.
