Obituary for Betty I. Baker (Flickinger)

Betty I. Baker (Flickinger)
Betty I. (Flickinger) Baker passed away at the Grove in New Wilmington on February 15, 2019 at 4:15 a.m. with her daughter, Karen, at her side.

She was born on August 26, 1936 in Columbiana, Ohio to the late Phillip Flickinger and Laura Belle (Hill) Flickinger Miller.

She married Albert H. (Sonney) Baker, Jr. on Christmas Day, 1954. He was the love of her life. He passed away on November 27, 2005.

Once Betty’s children were in elementary school she returned to the work force in the late 1960”s. She began her career at the East Side Community Action Center with her supervisor and best friend forever, Mildred Moore. While at the Center she became the “enforcer” keeping most of the young men in the neighborhood on life’s right path. Also, she was an aide with Head Start.

Betty was the president of Harry W. Lockley PTA in the late 1960”s while her son, Bill, was a student. She served as president of the many bowling leagues in which she was a member.
During the 1960’s she attended many of Albert’s Little League games. Her family hosted two of the Long Island All-Stars when they came to play the New Castle All-Stars in 1967.
She continued her career at the Lawrence County Jail in 1986 starting in the kitchen. She rose through the ranks and retired in 2001 as a Corrections Officer. She was affectionately known as “Miss Betty”. She received many citations for her marksmanship.
After retiring from the Lawrence County Jail, she attended many Pirate games with her daughters, Karen and Brenda. Betty was an avid Pirates, Steelers and Pens fan. She enjoyed trips with her sister, Cora and brother-in-law, Will. She had an “itch” for local casinos, especially Mountaineer. Family members knew when it was time for a casino run because she would say, “I got a clean shirt on!!”

She is survived by her four children, Albert H. Baker, III, Karen M. Baker, Brenda L. Baker, William D. Baker (DeAnna), her sister, Cora (Will) Ferro and her sister-in-law, Dorothy J. Christy (Gary). She is also survived by eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Albert H and Bessie J. Baker, brothers, Charles E. (Bud) Flickinger and Harvey LeRoy Miller, sisters, Helen M. (Flickinger) Price and Edna May (Miller) Brown, sister-in-law, Margaret J. (Price) Snyder, nephews, Charles Price, William Christy, and Norman C (Randy) Johnston, and many of her oldest and dearest friends, including Shirley and Ted Zak.

Visitation will be on Monday 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 South Mill St. A service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
