Obituary for Susan P. Papa (Cook)

Susan P. Papa, 94, of New Castle, passed away the morning of November 27, 2018 at Haven Convalescent Home.

Born on June 25, 1924 in Chewton, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Pezzuto Cook.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City in the class of 1942. An active person her entire life, Susan worked through the war effort at Ellwood Sheet and Tube as an original “Rosie the Riveter”. She then worked as a secretary to the Principal at the Youth Development Center. Her greatest joy and achievement was that of a homemaker and raising her seven children. Later in life Susan immersed herself in charity work with much of it being unsung, such as visiting nursing homes and “adopting” people into her family when in most cases they would have no one. Susan taught her children through her actions that charity does indeed begin at home. As her final act of charity, Susan requested her body be donated to the UPMC Medical School.

Susan is survived by her children, Mary Ann Reiter and her husband Robert of New Castle, Attorney Susan M. Papa of New Castle, Alfred V. Papa, Jr. and his wife Monica of Penn Hills, PA, Dr. Richard A. Papa and his wife Kathy of New Castle, Dr. Charles M. Papa of Atlanta, GA, Robert A. Papa of Lehigh Acres, FL and Gregory T. Papa of New Castle, a brother, Nick Cook of Sarasota, FL, thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her former husband and father of her children, Attorney Alfred V. Papa, Sr., four brothers, Frank, A.J., Michael and Joseph Cook, three sisters, Carolyn Rainey, Theresa Fantone and Ann Didiano.

The family will receive friends Monday, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 South Mill St.

A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 6:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Frederick Gilbert.

Interment will take place in Oak Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan P. Papa Charity Fund c/o Attorney Susan M. Papa, 439 Court St. New Castle, Pa. 16101.
