Obituary for Charlene R. Gill

Charlene Rose (Byler) Gill, 69, of New Castle, passed away Friday, October 5, 2018 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She is survived by her husband of thirty nine years, Jack F. Gill; a daughter, Erin Ninehouser, and son-in-law, David Ninehouser of Ambridge; her four siblings, Charles K. Byler, Sally McIlrath, Donna Grundy, and Kenneth Byler, and four beloved grand-cats, Frankie, Beans, Callie and Sgt. Squeaks.

Born in New Castle on August 2, 1949, she was preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. Byler and Luella (Proffitt) Byler; and two grand-dogs, Jesse and Max.

An avid and talented knitter, Charlene mentored dozens new to the craft, spending her time volunteering to make prayer shawls, hats for cancer patients, and blankets for the homeless. She was a fixture and friend to all at Challenges, where she played pool and enjoyed time with her friends. She got the last laugh on her daughter, Erin, winning their final game of Scrabble.

Before her health declined, Charlene was an active member of Epworth United Methodist and later Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, cooking for church dinners and bake sales, visiting members in the hospital and helping wherever it was needed. She was the star bowler on her team in the Squabblers League at Colonial Lanes, where she bowled alongside her husband Jack for decades, and celebrated her first turkey (three strikes in a row) on Mother’s Day 2016.

A longtime volunteer at City Rescue Mission and recent member of the Lawrence County League of Women Voters, Charlene lived the values of her Christian faith by serving and standing up for others. She was a compassionate advocate for those society overlooked, making phone calls, attending rallies, and registering voters. Her efforts were recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama, who met with Charlene in 2008 to thank her for her dedication to creating a more just, loving, humane world.

This “grand lady” will be deeply missed by scores of friends, old and new, and by all whose lives her kind presence made brighter.

Family and friends are invited to remember Charlene on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 10:00AM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00AM conducted by Rev. William R. LaVelle, Jr. of Epworth United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Lawrence County League of Women Voters or to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary at Villa Maria Development Office P.O. Box 534 Villa Marie, PA 16155.
