Sylvia J.  Smith
Sylvia J. Smith, 86, of New Castle, passed away the evening of August 28, 2018 at Jameson Care Center after a six month illness. Born on July 15, 1932 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late George L. and Helen M. Pennington Smith.

After 34 years of working, Sylvia retired as a manager of the Mortgage Department for PNC Bank. She was a member of the Class of 1950 at New Castle High School and a graduate of Bucknell University. Very active in her community, Sylvia formerly served as a Director for Shenango Valley Junior Achievement Board, Board Member for the Grove City Food Pantry, Secretary for the Grove City Salvation Army, volunteer for United Community Hospital, and the Volunteer Day Chairman for the American Red Cross. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Grove City, PA.

Sylvia is survived by her sister, Nancy Kalajainen, friend and caregiver, Elaine James, one niece, and three nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Wilson, and a nephew.

Visitation will be held Friday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00am at the funeral home, officiated by Reverend Dennis Bupp.

Interment will take place in Castleview Memorial Gardens.

Honoring her wishes, the family asks that no flowers be sent to the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Sylvia’s honor to Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S Broad St, Grove City, PA 16127 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
