Obituary for William G. Tanner Sr.

William G. Tanner Sr., 88, of Shenango Township, passed away the evening of July 18, 2018 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on October 24, 1929 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Charles W. Sr. and Anna Baka Tanner. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, the former Verna B. Majeski, whom he married on June 2, 1951.

After more than 35 years of working, William retired from his job in the meter department for Penn Power. He also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict where he earned a Purple Heart. William was a member of the American Legion Post 343 and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed watching sports, westerns, and talk shows, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, William is survived by his children, Charlene A. Tanner, William G. Tanner Jr. and wife Kimberly, Patti Morici and husband Matt, and Brian Tanner and wife Debbie, all of New Castle; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Tanner Jr. and Robert Tanner.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00am to 11:15am at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites Saturday at 11:15am at the funeral home. A procession will leave Saturday at 11:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00pm at St. Vincent de Paul Church, officiated by Father Frank Almade.

Interment will take place in St. Philip and James Cemetery.
