Obituary for Nick J. Quarto

Nick J. Quarto, 91, passed away on Friday, April 27 in Grand Rapids, MI, surrounded by his family. Nick was born on April 8, 1927 to Antonio and Elizabeth Quarto in New Castle, PA.

He grew up in Mahoningtown, and his heart never left there. He served in WWII. While in the service, Nick had vocal cord surgery, which left him with a voice little louder than a raspy whisper. He came home, attended Slippery Rock College, and subsequently graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Western Michigan University.

He began work as a speech pathologist and later became Assistant Director of Special Education in Muskegon, MI. Nick loved golf and all of his golfing buddies. His life was infused by generosity, friendship, and humor, all overflowing to those who met him. Nick had a deep, loyal love for his family and friends. He is irreplaceable.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Elizabeth Quarto, brothers, Louis Quarto and James Quarto, and sister, Annetta Compelio. Nick is survived by Joyce, his wife of 65 years; sons Tony(Teresa), Mark(Christina), and Christopher(Kathy); brother, Ammie(Anita) Maravelli; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews, all of whom he cherished.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 4, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites Saturday, May 5, at 9:15am at the funeral home. A procession will leave the funeral home Saturday at 9:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Interment will take place in St. Lucy Cemetery.

Nick made the following request: “Please, no flowers, as I am allergic to flowers and might sneeze. In lieu of flowers, please consider the Lawrence County Association for the Blind, 319 North Jefferson Street, New Castle, PA 16101.”
